How to View Your Mac Screen on Your iPhone

Pilot Screen View brings your Mac desktop into the iPhone app, so you can see the window you are controlling. It is useful when you need to check a dialog, find the right field, or navigate a Mac window without a clear view of the laptop display.

Mac screen on iPhone: which direction do you need?

Start by checking which device you want to see. Viewing the Mac desktop on your iPhone is a different task from showing your iPhone display on the Mac.

Apple's iPhone Mirroring lets you interact with your iPhone from your Mac. Pilot Screen View works in the other direction: the Mac desktop appears inside Pilot on the phone. This guide covers that Pilot workflow.

Screen View is also different from the Trackpad surface. Trackpad gives you an area for controlling the pointer; Screen View adds the desktop image so you can see where you are working.

Prepare Pilot and the Mac helper

You need Pilot on your iPhone and the Pilot helper on the Mac you want to view. Download the helper from pilotremote.app/helper on your Mac, extract the ZIP, then open the helper and follow its permission instructions.

Pair the devices by scanning the QR code shown by the helper from Pilot on your iPhone. Check that the Mac selected in Pilot is the one whose desktop you intend to see. Keep the helper running.

If this is your first connection, the Mac remote setup guide walks through pairing. The website's App Store download link will be enabled when the listing URL is available.

Open Screen View

  1. Go to Trackpad in Pilot. Check the device name and connection indicator in the header.
  2. Tap Screen. The screen button is in the Trackpad header, beside the selected Mac.
  3. Check the desktop image. Confirm that it shows the Mac window you expect before sending input.
  4. Choose a touch mode. Screen View has touch-mode controls at the top, alongside the keyboard button. Test a small interaction in the selected mode to check how it behaves.
  5. Tap Done when you finish. Return to the main remote controls when you no longer need the desktop view.

For your first test, use a simple window you can also watch on the Mac. This makes it easier to learn the input behavior and confirm that your actions reach the intended window.

Use the keyboard with the desktop view

Open the keyboard control when you need to enter text. First select the intended text field on the Mac, then type. Seeing the field in Screen View helps you check that the right window is active.

If text appears in the wrong place, stop and check focus rather than sending the same text again. A desktop image tells you what is visible, but the active field determines where keyboard input goes.

For modifier keys, common shortcuts or composing a longer phrase on your phone, return to the main controls. The Trackpad and keyboard guide explains the Keyboard, More Keys and Send to Mac options.

Why are there black areas around the desktop?

A Mac desktop is wide, while an iPhone held upright is tall. Showing the whole desktop without stretching it can leave unused space above and below the image. That space does not, by itself, mean the connection has failed.

Check whether the actual desktop area contains the expected windows. A visible desktop with surrounding space is different from a view where no desktop image arrives at all.

Small desktop text can still be difficult to read on a phone. For a specific task, consider using Pilot's dedicated controls: Present for slide navigation, or Media for playback and volume. You may only need Screen View briefly to confirm the active window.

If Screen View is blank or input does not work

No desktop image: confirm the selected Mac, check that its helper is running, and review the helper's instructions for screen access. Pairing and permission to display the screen are separate parts of setup. Complete any outstanding prompts on the Mac.

The desktop is visible but input does not respond: check the selected touch mode and the helper's input-control permissions. Compare with Trackpad to see whether the problem affects pointer input generally or only the screen-view workflow.

Keyboard input affects another window: bring the intended Mac window to the foreground and select its text field again. Verify the result before continuing.

The view no longer matches the Mac: check the connection state and helper, then leave Screen View with Done and open it again. Test a simple change on the Mac so you can tell whether the image updates.

Common questions

Does Screen View need the Mac helper?

Yes. Install and open the helper on the Mac, complete its permission instructions and pair it with Pilot.

Is this Apple's iPhone Mirroring?

No. iPhone Mirroring displays the phone on the Mac. This guide shows the Mac desktop inside Pilot on the iPhone.

Does seeing the desktop confirm access from outside my network?

No. This guide covers the paired Pilot workflow. Follow the connection instructions in your app version rather than assuming that Screen View establishes internet access to your Mac.

Connect your Mac to Pilot

The Mac helper is required. Download it on your Mac, then pair with Pilot on your iPhone using the helper's QR code.
